Leon Camier doubled up on wins at Knockhill, securing his tenth race win of the season for Airwaves Yamaha team after an early tussle with HM Plant Honda’s Josh Brookes.
Camier said after the race: “I need to send massive thanks to the whole of the Airwaves Yamaha team as they had never won at Knockhill before this weekend so to do the double is even more special. It was difficult to concentrate at certain points but it is a great result for the whole team and I don’t intend on slowing down any time soon.”
Brookes got the whole shot off the line for the first time this season on the HM Plant Honda, with fellow Honda rider Stuart Easton second and Camier in third. This didn’t last long though as Camier was instantly on the attack, passing the Hydrex Honda into the Real Radio Hairpin on the second lap.
The second of the Hydrex Hondas was also on a charge, with Karl Harris sitting ninth in the opening laps but on lap three he made a move on Graeme Gowland. The ‘Bomber’ ran as high as seventh until lap 20 when he suffered a technical problem and had to retire.
Brookes and Camier were clashing at the front though, with the HM Plant Honda leading over the line until lap seven despite the pair swapping paint on several occasions. Camier was able to put the Airwaves Yamaha ahead on lap eight as they crossed the line but Brookes was able to retake the lead on the brakes into Seat Curve. The lead was short-lived though and Camier edged ahead again and despite another attack by Brookes he maintained his position which he held until the end of the race.
Ian Lowry was running in the top ten on the Relentless Suzuki by TAS but on lap eight he was forced to retire with a technical problem.
The race was on for the next step of the podium with Easton leading Michael Rutter and James Ellison, with the Airwaves Yamaha rider moving fourth at the Real Radio Hairpin on the twelfth lap.
Rutter then dropped another place a lap later when he went wide at the same point, which let Chris Walker’s Motorpoint/Henderson Yamaha ahead, only for the ‘Blade’ to rub elbows with him across the line to hold off the ‘Stalker’. Rutter was running fifth when disaster struck and he crashed out at the Real Radio Hairpin on the 21st lap.
In the closing stages of the race Tommy Bridewell on the Team NB Suzuki was able to get by Mirror.co.uk Cup leader Gary Mason at Leslies to move ninth behind Julien Da Costa on the second of the MSS Colchester Kawasakis.
