The opening day of 250cc testing at the Circuito de Jerez saw Spanish rider Hector Barbera showing that he is back in business. Having returned to testing action a fortnight ago after recovering from a serious back injury, the Pepe World rider marked his return to riding in his homeland with a late surge to top the timesheets.
Barbera clocked the quickest time of 1’43.156 in the final minutes of the dedicated quarter-litre class afternoon session on Wednesday afternoon, taking three-tenths of a second out of Marco Simoncelli’s previous marker from the morning run. It was Barbera’s ninth lap of the afternoon outing on his Aprilia RSA
Third quickest in the post-lunch session –which saw warmer and sunnier conditions than the overcast first free practice but generally slower times- was 2008 250cc World Championship runner-up Alvaro Bautista. The Jerez test is also Bautista’s second time riding since coming back from injury, a collarbone fracture suffered in early February.p>
Honda man Ratthapark Wilairot was next on the results sheet and the only other rider to go round in under 1’44, ahead of 250cc newcomer Gabor Talmacsi and Hiroshi Aoyama at the close of the day.
Team Toth’s Mattia Pasini suffered a crash early on Wednesday afternoon, leaving his Aprilia bike needing some hasty repairwork.
250cc testing continues on Thursday, the second of three days on track for the lower cylinder categories.
